Subaru Clutch Master Cylinder Replacement - OEM Parts Information
Order a new clutch master cylinder at Capitol Subaru of Salem

It was many years ago that automobiles became too complex for an average high school student in shop class to understand them well enough to service them. So here at Capitol Subaru in Salem, Oregon, we're doing what we can to help you understand some of your Subaru's most essential parts. Even more importantly, We want to inform you about any unusual behaviors your vehicle may exhibit that signal a need for an inspection. Here, we'll tell you about your clutch, and especially its master cylinder.

Your vehicle's clutch is one of its critical assemblies. Without it, or without it working correctly, your car, truck, or SUV won't be going anywhere. Even in an automatic transmission when there isn't a clutch pedal at your feet, your transmission still relies on all the same parts a manual transmission's clutch would use to disengage from a gear, select another gear, and engage with that one, quickly and smoothly.

Signs of Trouble on the Horizon

With a manual transmission, the first indicator of clutch problems is usually the clutch pedal. If you notice that it's not springing back as fast as it used to when you take your foot off of it, that's often a sign of an issue beginning. And if the clutch pedal depresses farther before it engages or goes all the way to the floor without taking the car out of gear, that's definitely a sign of a serious hydraulic problem.

With automatic transmissions, signs of a failing clutch will be having trouble getting into gear and/or staying in gear. You might notice the engine revving more than usual before the vehicle starts moving forward. You might also notice high revving at other times if the transmission is slipping out of gear, even when you're not accelerating.

With any transmission, grinding noises that happen when you're accelerating or changing gears is usually a sign that either the clutch or the transmission itself is in serious trouble. That's the sound of metal grinding against metal, which is exactly as bad as it sounds.

Since most modern vehicles rarely have leaks in their hydraulic lines, a failing clutch is usually due to a failing master cylinder, which moves to create pressure in the clutch's hydraulic lines. It amplifies the pressure of your foot or the transmission's automatic clutch. That pressure pushes the clutch out and away from the transmission's gears. If there isn't enough pressure, the clutch won't fully disengage. If there's too little pressure, the clutch might disengage too easily or too quickly. Either way, the clutch will grind against the gears, and it won't take long for that to lead to very expensive repairs.
