CV Axle / Half Shaft Owner’s Information at Capitol Subaru

It's not a résumé, it's not a vitamin store, and it's not 105 in Roman numerals. The "CV" in the front axle of your Subaru stands for Continuous Velocity. That's because it provides constant and smooth power from the transmission to the front wheels, even while they're bouncing up and down and turning. It's part of the reason Subaru vehicles deliver amazingly accurate torque and horsepower through a variety of road and weather conditions. A CV axle is also sometimes called a "half shaft", because the shafts that drive each wheel span about half the width of the car, and are joined together near the middle by a flexible CV joint.

What It Shouldn't Do…

In addition to their renown for excellent control in a wide variety of driving conditions, Subaru vehicles also have a stellar reputation for durability and longevity. In fact, 95% of all Subaru vehicles sold in the past 10 years are still on the road today. Of course, nothing lasts forever; and in the case of a CV axle, debris from the road can perforate or tear the rubber boot that covers and protects it. That often leads to foreign objects getting inside and damaging the internal parts as they move. There are also various unusual events that can damage the CV joint or half shafts in your Subaru. And once any mechanical part that moves at such high speeds becomes compromised, it doesn't take long at all for damage to get much worse… and much more expensive to repair. So bring your car or SUV in for an inspection as soon as you notice any of these symptoms:

• You hear a clicking or popping noise from the front area of your car; especially if it happens when you're turning.
• You feel significant vibration or wobbling in the steering wheel, especially when you're accelerating. If this vibration is in the whole car, things have gone very wrong indeed.
• You hear and/or feel a clear "clunk" or knocking noise when shifting gears or accelerating.
• You experience difficulty in steering that isn't attributable to something else.

…And Where to Take It When It Does
